Paco's Top 6 Possibily Jazz (or Possibility Jazz) Picks of 2013

Dear hired hands!

Here's the next list of my lists. It's Jass Time! This Jazz though is mostly in the "Free" vein or experimental. Some of it might not even be considered jazz by some (barbarians!). This list will mostly appeal to those of you who like the last experimental drone list. anyway...

1. Jeremiah Cymerman - Sky Burial (5049 Records)

This is a sweet beast of a record. Jeremiah Cymerman rocks the Clarinet (yes the clarinet!) and "Electronics.  He is joined by the always reliable former chicago mainstay (he moved to new york now) Matt Bauder also on Clarinet, Electronics, and Sax, and then sweet new york trumpeters Nate Wooley and Peter Evans. To be honest, although those 3 are some of the best sweet dudes in contemporary experimental Jazz, I'd never heard of ol Jere' here. But I will definitely be paying attention from here on out. This baby is a sweet ride all the way through. It's an incredible sound texture weaved by these fellas. Nice JOB! Also there's a song called "Skull Bowl".

2. Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile (Constellation)

This is more likely to be liked by more people than than my first choice and is much more clearly "JAZZ". But its also still very wild and adventurous. This is the second release in Chicago/New York's Matana Robert's incredible "Coin Coin" series. The music is what she terms, "panoramic sound quilting". and that is pretty much what it sounds likes, a mashup of spoken word, historical narratives, re-framed historical phrases and cliches (both of word and music). It kind of sounds like someone's insane black history/jazz grad school project, but without any of the dryness which that may conjure. Excited to see where this project goes.

3. Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol 3: To See More Light (Constellation)

Oh Colin, the favorite saxophone player of everyone who doesn't know the name of any other living saxophone players. I kid, I kid. Well, it's probably true, However, fortuantely for us, he's good enough that we don't need to give a care about that. Most of you probably already know this album. If you don't, then get in the know right now. This might be my favorite of the 3 "New History of Warfare" releases. This is also not what many people would refer to as Jazz. Regardless, its powerful and transcendent and still unbelievable that these things are recorded solo. Geez, Constellation Records, while don't you just release all the best albums of the year?

4. Arve Henriksen - Places of Worship (
Rune Grammofon)

This ones got some appeal. You should dig it. It's not loud or wierd like this other music. It's almost ambient.

Trumpeter Arve's 2007, "Strjon" is one my favorite albums of all time and a super underrated classic.

This is not as good as that, but it is still "Arve Henriksen good". First thing to know is that ol' Arve has the best best best trumpet tone ever. Also This is a very Norwegian feeling record. It's also very meditative, which is good as per its theme/title. Occasionally it might go a slightly a little too new agey for some of you, but you should not fear it my friend! Mostly, man that trumpet!

5. Ches Smith and These Arches - Hammered (Clean Feed)

Alright after that interlude of quiet good times, let's get back to some action packed noisy times. This album is good. Surprisingly good actually. It really gets you. You think you know where its heading then its like wait oh yeah you love it and then you do. How's that for incisive music criticism?
"These Arches" are apparently Andrea Parkins on Accordian/Electronics, Tim Berne on Alto Sax, Mary Halvorson on Guitar, and Tony Malaby on Tenor Sax. Ches Smith is a drummer and drummers leading Jazz groups often seems to be a good thing. Now honestly, I had only heard of Tim Berne before, but now I realize I'm an out-of-it fool for not knowing the rest of these people particularly, Ches and Mary.
Anyway basically this is a solid group which I hope puts out more stuff. They play very well together. Also some dang good melodies here, actually catchy sometimes. Like I said before this album gets better as you listen more. Still might be too Chaotic/noisy for some of you. oh well.

This video is a song on the album but live and the sound quality is not particularly great so I kind of don't want to post it. But anyway you get the idea.

6. Craig Taborn Trio - Chants (ECM Records)

Craig Taborn you guys. Also Craig Taborn making somewhat straight ahead "normal" album with a drums/bass/piano trio. Also Gerald Cleaver is on those drums. This is a much more subdued album than most of the list here (except Arve H.'s). It's also probably the most likely to not be considered "Not Jazz" by someone. Jazz! Hey Check it out. It's a bit long sometimes. I'd really like to see this trio live.

This video is not the album but live and seems to have been recorded on VHS or something. anyway it will give you the feel of it.

Paco's Favorite 11 Exspearimental/Dronezz/whatevslikethatyoutguys releasers of 2013

Hey Channies, Maybe you thought I wasn't gonna make lists. Well maybe you didn't know that the sound on my computer broke but I, even I, persevered. This is the first of 4 easily digestible lists split up according to genre sort of, or just like whatevs.

This first list is XPERI-MeNTAL-IzM! WOAH YEAH! So if you are one of those guys who is like "hey whats all that racket?", then maybe you wanna skip this list. But also why not open up your mind and free your soul and give peace a chance and stick around? Let's go!

All that said, experimental music does not easily lend itself to rankings/list makings etc...as experimental music is often much more casual, the art act integrated into daily life, for everyone by everyone, as opposed to art as event, the album as blockbuster red carpet roll out hype, which is more easily found in other genres. This is a good thing in my opinion but also why people often think its "boring" because their listening is framed in a different manner. It's also why they don't end up on lists because they are not designed in such away as to be "album of the year" or whatever.

But anyway lists are fun so screw all that here's some stuff i liked.

1. The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation - Roadburn (Parallel Corners)

This bad boy was a sweet bad boy. I'm not sure whether I should have put this in my jazz list (and yessir, there is a jazz list) but I put it here. Sweet slooooooooow dark doomy doomjazz. Most people will not think this counts as jazz. Basically if you love patience and slow doom timez, you will love to wander as a lost soul across this barren wasteland of joy. Also this was free on bandcamp! wow! Except right now that page seems down or something.

2. Jerusalem In My Heart - Mo7it Al-Mo7it (Constellation)

A lot of you cads were probably into this. And rightly so! What a heckuvan album! wowwies! It's like your sweet dream of middle eastern music mixed with your sweet dream of experimental electronic makin' It is great. Thanks to bryce for leading the way to glory town.

Seriously check out that track!

3. Bitchin Bajas - Krausened (Permanent Records)

Bitchin Bajas have always been bitchin'. This is yet another one of their great releases. If you are sad you were not born during the first round of droney electro Krautrock, don't worry cause BBs got your covered with this sweet krautyslab.

4. Günter Schlienz - The Catalanian Tapes (Seconds Records) /Organ Studies (Constellation Tatsu)

This one is a twofer. Both two great jams from the always solid Günter Schlienz. Synth it up, pal.

I couldn't find tracks from the albums. This is okay but not as good and not really what you need to know that.

5. Grapefruit - Stolen Highway (Constellation Tatsu)

Constellation Tatsu is putting out some good stuff. This is more synthy good times. Grapefruit is a fairly new comer but already batting like a pro. Last year's Twin Reflections c40 on Sloow Tapes was also great.

6. Forming - Variations of the One Essence (Worn Habit)

These guys are new and I know little about them except that they are from canada. Also they are masters of the gentle lo-fi loop. Many good things to be heard. track 3 "Resident of" is the most peaceful sample of all time looped for a way too short 3:20. OMG! Love it. Also I like the album art. Also they give their stuff away on bandcamp! Free! Actually going to find that link I found that they released a longer tape just this december. It could be even better! Its also free! I bet its not better than "Resident of" though! wow what a track of bliss!

There is supposed to be a bandcamp preview of the track embedded here but for some reason it won't embed. Probably because our blog is the worst most ugly blog of all time. Anyway its free at bandcamp, go get it!

7. Donato Dozzy - Plays Bee Mask (Spectrum Spools)

Who doesn't love Bee Mask? Well how about Bee Mask remixed as ambient italian techno? Originally supposed to be a one track remix of Bee Mask's Vaporware, Donato Dozzy like it so much he made a whole album. Great stuff. The preview below is snippets of the whole album so dig around.

8. Looks Realistic - Where Does it Come From? (Constellation Tatsu)

As I said, Constellation Tatsu is putting out some bangers. This is your standard issue lo-fi synthy loopy sound collage drone. Good stuff.

9. Expo '70 - Virtually from the Unknown (Sonic Meditations)

Expo '70 is always good news, but also a lot of it sounds the same (in a good way). So while I always enjoy the slow dark psychy zounds, nothing really stood out to me for a while, and with quite a few releases in my cachet, I sorta stopped paying attention for a bit. On a whim I nabbed this baby, and what a great whim that was! One of E70s top jambos in my opinion. Like much of Expo '70 this is dark super slow droney rock at that dangerous weird border where barn owl meets classic rock if classic rock was way more psyched out. This is a three peice though so it is actually a bit more psych rock than normal. Some of you may actually not like how much rock is going on here. Others will find the additional rock a welcome entry point. Anyway, if you are up for a long deep psych jam out then sync in your teethers.

10. Golden Pawn - This Lake is a Misty Mirror (Space Slave Editions)

Pleasant lo-fi ambient drone from newish label Space Slave Editions.

11. Noveller - No Dreams (Important Records)

I just heard this recently so I need to hear it more. Otherwise it might be up higher. I'm not quite sure whether I love it quite as much as some of Noveller's other blissfully noisy guitar drone gems (If you've not heard 2009's Red Rainbows, go find it immediately) but so far it sounds good. A bit more quiet/post-industrial collapse dystopian landscape film soundtrack than in the past which is not a bad thing. Basically I wanted to throw this up here because Noveller is a boss and it seems she doesn't get much recognition.

Other goodies, ie. Honorable Mention:
Julianna Barwick, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (cannot make a bad album), Aquarelle (Thanks Jim), Mammane Sani et son Orgue (Bryce, you'll love it), Date Palms (Bryce you will also like this), Jan St. Werner (This is gonna slip through the cracks and it shouldn't), J.D. Emmanuel (New Age synth king returns!), Moon Wheel

Top 10 African-American County Comptrollers

Haha you idiots. I hooked you with the title and now you have to look at my stupid list. I'm not even putting them in order this year. Read em and weep.

John Wizards - S/T

First up and oh so hot! Thanks to Paco for the tip. This is the most catchy and fun music thing of the year.

Eluvium - Nightmare Ending

Easily the best Eluvium album.

Sean McCann - Music For Private Ensemble

A yearly fixture on my lizt. Maybe his best yet? Or maybe it's not? So many layers! So epic! So many instruments mostly played by Sean hisself! How awful is that cover though? Yeah pretty awful.

Deep Magic - Reflections of Most Forgotten Love

Lots of best albums yet by my old faves this year.

Aquarelle - August Undone

You know I'm a sucker for lush, vibrant drones. This hits the spot.

Jerusalem In My Heart - Mo7it Al-Mo7it

Give me a break. Just listen to this. Serious jamz.

Julianna Barwick - Nepenthe

Oh man what a beautiful dream! A clear step up from her already awesome first album.

Julian Lynch - Lines

A seriously underrated guy I think. Real nice tunes.

Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven

It's great. Nothing else really sounds like this.

Tim Hecker - Virgins

Ol' Timmy never really puts out a bad album, and this is up to his usual standard. Everyone likes virgins, right? Also did you know he's getting his Ph.D. in the subject area Urban Noise?

Also I loved Daft Punk, but you already know about that, right?

Top Albums of 2013 According To Math

From the Law Offices of Babip, Pecota, Vorp, Eckstein & Rice

I wanted to do something different for my albums list, seeing as how I haven't done one in 3 or 4 years, and also because I love stats and math. Last.fm tracks most of what I listen to so I decided why not go with my top ten most listened albums of the year -- I know it'll reward stuff that came out earlier in the year, but to be honest most top album lists err on the other side, celebrating stuff that was dropped recently and bumping stuff that got overplayed over the summer down a few notches. So maybe I'm balancing things out this way. Namaste? Whatevs.

(Also, I love pop music. Does that need a disclaimer? Who knows. This is the internet.)

1. Lorde ~ Pure Heroine

This one wasn't even close, especially if you count The Love Club EP she released in the spring. I loved Lorde this year. Really minimalistic at times. Really poppy, too. A better songwriter than she ought to be at her age. And when I first heard Royals on the radio it was like this:

2. Widowspeak ~ Almanac

I really fell for Widowspeak hard in the first half of 2013. Female singer. Check. Dream pop melodies. Check. 90s guitars. Check+. Um, you know I worship Mazzy Star, too, right? This album was possibly made just for me.

3. Lord Huron ~ Lonesome Dreams

I tired of this album really quickly, but for three months in early 2013 it was the best thing on the planet. I hate it when I do that to records, because this one is still pretty good. They got tagged as sort of Fleet Foxes-ish, which is a shame because they're doing some great new wave / Paul Simon inspired stuff, too. And you know I'm a sucker for Graceland.

4. Jai Paul ~ S/T

I have Plett to thank for this. If I still followed Pfork I might have caught it earlier in the year, but these demos weren't on my radar until much later. The fact that they shot up to number four in a relatively short time should tell you something. Another artist with some throwback sounds that reminded me of the best of the 1980s. If Prince and Frank Ocean and James Blake make you weak in the knees, check it out.

5. Daft Punk ~ Random Access Memories

No excuse for this not ranking higher. Other than that of the 233 times I listened to Daft Punk over the past 12 months only half came from RAM. Priorities, dammit!

6. Kacey Musgraves ~ Same Trailer Different Park

2012-13 will go in the books as the years I rediscovered country music. Musgraves writes really simple songs with really catchy melodies and no more than three or four chords a piece. And she's like 12. Okay, 25. Whatever. She also wrote a song for Nashville, which boasts Buddy Miller and T-Bone Burnitt as music supervisors. There's some serious cred there is what I'm saying.

7. Neko Case ~ The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You

Neko lives in Vermont, so I like to pretend we're neighbors. She might be Canadian, I forget. Her voice kills me. With daggers. End of discussion.

8. Autre Ne Veut ~ Anxiety

Whoa! Now there's some Sharebarn love from Paco. Gotta give credit where credit is Drew. (Gotta love Drew.) Give 2013 a few more weeks and this one keeps rising. I keep talking about throwback tunes to the 80s or 90s, and Autre Ne Veut have that sort of old-school luster, but they're most definitely a product of the the modern age. This is an album that only could have come out in 2013. Catchy as hell and sort of a revelation.

9. Yo La Tengo ~ Fade

No really, it's a great album. I'm old, okay, I get it. Sometimes old people albums creep into my lists. But easily their strongest set of songs since Summer Sun. Remember how I like dreamy pop? You forgot already?! What are you, a goldfish? Oh, you are? How are you even on the internet?

10. Chance the Rapper ~ Acid Rap

Does this redeem me? So a 20-yr-old released my favorite hip-hop album of 2013, I guess. I didn't expect that. I do really love fun-time, party rap. So in a year where everyone else played the rap game super serious, it makes sense. The rise of Lil Wayne and then Drake really turned me off for a while. But the pendulum swung back alright. 2014 could be a really good year.

Monday, December 23, 2013

Keep it trill.

Here we are, y'all. The end of 2013. To some, this year was written to be the best year yet. For others, probably not. And now it is my esteemed pleasure to extend to you my top 9 traxxx (plus BONUS) of this year, this once around the sun. Can you even be sure that you can even be ready? Hey, at least we aren't going to prison!

In no particular order:

Can't Stop, Miley Cyrus, Bangerz.
Please just stop pretending you hate her. Just stop it. Remember her version of Jolene? It's good. Just like this song, but in a different way. Also, stop pretending you don't want to *be* her. I want to have a gold vampire-esque grill. I want to eat 100$ bill sandwiches on white bread. And, if I'm totally serious, and I am, I want to adopt the mantra: It's our song, we can sing if we want to/It's my mouth, I can say what I want to. Don't pretend that doesn't resonate with you? AND the beat gets that body movin'. You know?

All of Me, John Legend, Love in The Future.
It's been a goddamned hot minute since I've been so in love with a love song. I can't even handle it. Please ignore the super corny, in-any-other-context-these-words-would-be-crazy-lame lyrics. Please. Because what this is about is his sincerity and that amazingly beautiful falsetto. And right in the middle of the clichés, he'll say something like: You're my downfall, you're my muse, my worst distraction, my rhythm and blues. Or maybe those ARE clichés, but I feel them. I really feel them. Maybe any artist who has a muse feels these words and with that piano, holy shit. Remember what it's like to love this hard? Do you?

Royals, Lorde, Pure Heroine.
You knew it. You knew this song was made for me and people like me. This song rocked me hard during the dying summer. And I get it - we'll just go ahead and accept where we are and what we're given. The video is really sexy, too. (Do you guys remember music videos?) Try to not sing this song. Try.

Black Skinhead, Kanye West, Yeezus.
Can I go ahead and put it out there: This isn't my favorite album. It's abrasive. It's right up in your face. Some of the beats are steeped in dissonance (New Slaves). Goosebumps, but in the crazy way. It makes me feel insanely weird for being a white person. Which, hey, I think white people deserve every now and then. On the heels of that, let me just say, this is exactly why this whole album is important. I'm still deciding on the whole Yeezus movement, I mean, it's good and great and relevant. And Black Skinhead hits me in ways not many songs do. Give me more time. Fuck up your whole afternoon shit, you know? He does that.

Back to the River, Lily and Madeleine, The Weight of the Globe.
Are you ready to get your heart ripped out right through your ear canals? Sometimes I'm depressed and all I do is listen to this song over and over and over and over again. I write with this song in the background. I feel this song. They are poetry; together, they are the poetry that created the first musician. And, as I sit and eat up their songs, I am the first ears to hear beauty.

Gas Pedal, Sage the Gemini, Gas Pedal.
Just shut up and let it do what it's intending to do. This isn't an important song. Duh. I know that. But can I just be entertained? But can I just love a song about big asses? But can I just love a song that is screaming for remix after remix after remix? Yes, I can. Also, I'll be damned if this video isn't totally dope. (I did just say "dope", I hope that's okay).

Get Lucky, Daft Punk, Random Access Memories.
If this isn't on your list, you a damn fool. Okay, maybe overplayed. But, for good reason, you know. I dare you to not shoulder dance to this track, y'all. You can't do it. Throwback feel to the 70s mixed in with essential contemporary. And yes, I think Daft Punk is essential. Do you even know what I mean?

Tom Ford, Jay-Z, Magna Carta Holy Grail.
Yeah, Hov, Yeah, Hov. You chumps knew this was a shoo-in. And why do I even love this? I don't know what it's like to be rich, even though after listening to this whole album, I get a feel for it. It's hard, isn't it, Jay? (I do know what it's like to be Flush Outta Riesling, tho) This album is on the other end of the spectrum vs. Yeezus. It isn't really socially relevant or important, I mean, not many of us can relate to spending all our euros on tuxes and weird clothes... but it's catchy, and you know what, I'll sing the fuck out of it.

Step, Vampire Weekend, Modern Vampires of the City.
Here's a spoiler alert: this is my top, tip top, cream of the crop, album of the year. It's extremely difficult to exclude ONE track to croon about. Seriously. But since I HAVE TO, this is the one I choose. This is riding around in the country, singing loudly, windows down summer time laid back beats. This is a heart, bleeding so perfectly right into the fourth track. And then, the fifth, and so on and so on. I mean, goddamn. Im not sure these songs could be perfected any more. This is it. This is the one. This is the winner.

7 Christmas Songs That Don't Suuuuuuuuck

Okay, I like Christmas music, sue me. NO REALLY. Sue me, I dare you. I have lawyers for fingers and it will be such a delight for them to get their briefcases out and write down some notes. You have NO IDEA how long it's been since they're taken notes.

BUT JONNY, Christmas music suuuuuuuucks, you say. Okay, maybe. Not if you love Enya though. If you do love Enya then you are the kind of fool who can get around Christmas pretty easy.  But I made the case for Enya a while ago. This is about 7 Christmas songs that aren't Enya, who do not suck, unless you think they do, but they don't, so you are probably wrong. It's okay. I was wrong about Elysium. I thought it was going to be an awesome movie. It wasn't. At all.

Hit play then meet me after the HTML code.

1. Low - Just Like Christmas ~ Okay, this is a pretty simple song. It's warbly. It's an original. Is good.

2. Bon Voyage - Holly Jolly Christmas ~ This is Jason Martin and his wife, Julie. I like their stuff. I told Jason once at Cornerstone he should make am entire Christmas album. He talked about how he drives trucks 9 months a year so he can afford to tour the other three months. It was sad.

3. The Raveonettes - The Christmas Song ~ What, you don't like the 60s? I can't help you.

4. Starflyer 59 - A Holiday Song ~ What is this like a Jason Martin blog or something? Well, you could do worse.

5. Pedro the Lion - I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day ~ Proof positive that sad-sack-o-crap Christmas songs are probably the best of all possible birds.

6. Sarah Masen - Heaven's Got a Baby ~ Original Christmas songs can be rly good. Esp if they're sung by beautiful little bbies like Sarah Masen.

7. Rosie Thomas - Christmas Don't Be Late ~ I don't know how she did it but Rosie made this terrible terrible Chimpmunks song into an amazing gospel number. No joke. This is gorge. A gorge of beauty. Jumped by Evel Knievel in 1986.

Leave your favorite Christmas song in the comments! Or don't! No skin off my stomach! haha!

Don't do me like that.

Hey, chumps - champion of all the chumpions. I'm not ready for my topsies music list, because let's face it, I probably won't do one... But, I wanted to let you in on my favorite videos I watched this year. BORING, but whatevers. Some of them are old, some of them are all, but all of them rule the M Fing roost.

Supernatural GAG REELS:
This one might not cause you to get the vapors like it does me, but any Supernatural Gag Reels make me laugh and laugh and laugh. Totes on this list because, let's face it, hot boys being funny is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

SWEET BROWN:
Life just isn't complete with an auto-tuned version of someone being absolutely crazy. Where would we be with out this niche in our society? Thanks, auto-tune remix people. I will always love you. (RIP Whitney Houston)
Lou Gehrig's Speech:
The problem here is, holy shit, you know? I watched this video for the first time this year on a particularly bad day in my library cubicle and cried and cried and cried. One of the most notable moments in the latter part of my year, hearing these words: "I may have been given a bad break, but I've got an awful lot to live for." Thanks, Lou. Seriously.
DIZZZZAY:
Don't you feel like you know this kid? Know exactly how he is IRL? He's a handful, but a damn cute one. And watching this video made me almost pee my pants everytime. So, kudos, Matt on breaking your arm.
OH LORDY LORDY LORDY:
Yeah, this dude is nuts. Too bad for him he broke his arm playing hockey but good job dad for filming this gem of a recovery. THis video is long, yes, it's long, but don't let that discourage you from watching the whole thing. It's amazing. My favorite part: "I think I'm coming back to my normal self".  Spoiler Alert: He wasn't.!
TWO TONGUES?:
Unfortunately for my sanity, I watched a lot of innocent kid vids coming out of anesthesia. That probably makes me totally weird and crazy. But F that, yo. Especially because I ran across this girl. Probably the best thing ever.
JUST LIKE US:
Guys, celebs are just like us! They get scared and look crazy doing it. Good thing for us Ellen loves to prank the shit out of people. Love this video.
JOHNNY, QUIT SCREAMING:
The one video that can snap me out of a terrible mood. My friend Brett introduced me to Johnny. The shortest video of all time (not really, but kind of), but the best video of all time. I can sometimes watch this video 80 times in one week. Im going to go ahead and vote this best video of 2012.

There you have it - love you like a sister.

Top Other Trax '12

Here's some other great hits that weren't a part of my top albums list.

JJ Doom - Wash Your Hands

This album (collaboration between Doom and Jneiro Jarel) was just okay, but this song rules.

Also this album is great because it introduced me to Jneiro Jarel, and he's the best (this is old, but whatever):

Emeralds - Just to Feel Anything

I thought Emeralds' latest was a bit of a step down, but it still had some great songs, the best of which is this one. Also, this totally sounds like Metavari.

Outer Space - October 27th, 1989 - Bay Village, Ohio

John Elliott's new album as Outer Space is as good as ever. Actually, I'm not sure why it's not on my albums list. Oops! The synth in this song is hard-hitting and "badass."

White Rainbow - Racked up Spatter Clock

This guy is super versatile, releasing material ranging from smooth ambient to serious beats. This track is somewhere in between.

Lotus Plaza - Eveningness
I think this guy is in Deerhunter, and this basically sounds like that. It's good.

Beach House - Myth
I felt this album to be a little overrated, but it's still good. I love this song.

Black Moth Super Rainbow - Like a Sundae
Hey, this is good too.
